Regulatory bodies
IMO 2020
The International Maritime Organization's 2020 rule capping marine fuel sulphur at 0.5%.
IMO 2020 is the International Maritime Organization's regulation (effective 1 Jan 2020) that capped marine fuel sulphur content at 0.5% (from 3.5%). Scrubber-equipped vessels can still burn HSFO; all others must use VLSFO, LSMGO, or LNG.
The rule reshaped bunker fuel flows globally and remains the most important recent structural regulatory change in physical refined products.
